50, NOT DEAD EPISODE 16: Barbara Simon-Evrenosoglu
At 50, Barbara Simon-Evronsoglu's department, in a large, white-male dominant company, was dissolved. She watched from the outside as it was reconstructed by a younger man. Initially crushing, Barbara ultimately realized that the job hadn't been that great at all. She was then able to accept the layoff with grace and she reconnected with her kids, with her family and with friends all over the globe.
After six years though she realized, "I'm not done yet". She wanted to work. She had more to do, more to give, more to learn.
Listen in as this seasoned leader describes with honesty and candor, in her own words and through her own lens, what it is like to be a female in her 50's in a male dominated industry. How grateful she was that the company that hired her "took a chance" on a "middle-aged" woman. There was no response from them when she pointed that out.
She sees that she is one of the only women at her level but is hopeful that by "doing the right thing", this company can inspire its own leaders and leaders in other companies, and in other industries, by the halo effect.
Do the right thing, hire qualified people of all ages, genders, and races and be the frontrunner, not the one that lags. It has not been a quick, clean road; not for Barbara, not for any of us.
It's been a real road though. One that many women will be able to relate.
